This website was developed for use as a practical, point-of-care guide for clinicians within the author’s health care network. It is designed for clinicians engaged in perioperative care or preoperative evaluation and management. It is written from the perspective of an anesthesiologist/perioperativist yet useful for anyone performing  preoperative evaluations or  developing enhanced recovery pathways to optimize surgical outcomes.

In transitioning to a web-based format, the intent is to share this resource with others and develop  this site as a collaborative resource.

Angela F Edwards MD FASA DFPM

Angela F. Edwards, MD FASA DFPM, is  an associate professor of anesthesiology at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston Salem, North Carolina. Dr. Edwards has served as medical director of preoperative assessment clinic, Section Head of perioperative medicine, President of the Society for Perioperative Assessment and Quality Improvement (SPAQI), and  Director for the society’s annual meeting, The Perioperative Medicine Summit.   Dr. Edwards is a recognized expert in preoperative optimization strategies, perioperative medicine and enhanced recovery with a special interest in patient centered care and quality improvement initiatives. 


Dr. Edwards has been actively promoting patient-centered perioperative care  while serving  in several roles nationally and internationally.  Her research interests include care of the aging patient, prehabilitation, managing frailty, cognitive decline, and  shared decision-making with surgical patients and families. Managing preoperative anemia and mitigating risks of renal dysfunction are also areas of ongoing investigations and clinical practice. Dr. Edwards’ research has been funded through an NIH/NIA grant  identifying frail patients using an electronic medical record-based frailty index while simultaneously designing programs to mitigate  physical and cognitive and risks.  Dr. Edwards serves on the American Society of Anesthesiologists’ ( ASA) Perioperative Medicine Education track subcommittee ( Chair), the Committee for Perioperative Outcomes Measures (CPOM), and the Women in Anesthesia  (WIA) committee. She  has presented nationally and  internationally and serves on several review boards and educational committees for the International Anesthesia Research Society, American Society of Anesthesiologists, Anesthesia & Analgesia, and the Journal of Evidence-Based Perioperative Medicine. Dr. Edwards has been repeatedly invited to present at national and international conferences on topics related to preoperative clinics, medical optimization, enhanced recovery, and designing effective patient care models.
